Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of shaping how AI answer engines represent a person, company, or brand. Where traditional SEO optimized ranked links on a search results page, GEO optimizes the synthesized answer an AI engine returns — on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Grok. For reputation management, GEO is the next layer: it determines what a user reads when they ask an AI about a name, without ever clicking a source.
GEO rests on several principles. AI engines synthesize answers from authoritative, relevant sources, so reputation work targets those sources rather than blue-link position. Entity consistency — a single, clean set of canonical facts across the web — lets the engine reconcile the entity correctly. Authority content provides well-researched, citable material the engine can synthesize. Structured data (schema.org) labels facts machine-readably. FAQ optimization matches the question-and-answer format engines parse. Source correction fixes inaccurate summaries at the indexed source rather than manipulating the model.
The unit of reputation in GEO is the answer, not the ranking. A user who asks "Should I invest in [Company]?" or "What are the controversies around [Executive]?" receives a synthesized summary that shapes their decision before any article is read. Because that summary is grounded in cited sources and, for some engines, embedded in training data, it can persist far longer than a news cycle. This persistence makes proactive GEO discipline more valuable than reactive repair.
GEO never attempts to manipulate models directly. The durable lever is source correction and authority building: improve the indexed inputs, maintain entity consistency, publish structured authoritative content, and the synthesized output follows. This is slower than a ranking tweak but far more permanent — corrected sources change the answer for every engine that draws on them.
For organizations and named individuals, GEO is now a mandatory layer of reputation management, layered on top of traditional SEO and ORM, because the AI summary is increasingly the first and only impression an audience receives.
